Orthodontic Retention

Retainers After Braces

You’ve worked hard for your beautiful smile—now it’s important to keep it that way.

After braces or clear aligner treatment, retainers play a critical role in maintaining your results. Although your teeth are now straight, the surrounding gums, bone, and muscles need time to stabilize around their new positions.

Retainers help hold your teeth in their corrected alignment and prevent them from gradually shifting over time. Wearing your retainer as instructed helps protect the investment you made in your orthodontic treatment and keeps your smile looking its best.

Why Retainers Are Important

Even after orthodontic treatment is complete, teeth naturally tend to move over time. Without a retainer, teeth can slowly shift back toward their original positions.

Retainers help:

  • Maintain the alignment achieved during orthodontic treatment
  • Stabilize teeth while surrounding tissues adjust
  • Prevent unwanted tooth movement
  • Protect the long-term results of your smile

Consistent retainer wear is one of the most important steps in keeping your smile straight and healthy.

Types of Retainers

Retainers are custom-made for your smile and may be either removable or fixed.

Traditional Removable Retainers

Traditional retainers typically include a thin metal wire that runs across the front teeth and is attached to an acrylic base that sits along the roof of the mouth. The wire can sometimes be adjusted to refine minor tooth movement if needed.

Clear (Essix or Zendura) Retainers

Clear retainers, often called Essix or Zendura retainers, look similar to clear aligners. These retainers are nearly invisible and fit snugly over the teeth. They are made from a mold of your newly aligned smile and provide a more aesthetic option for many patients.

Fixed Retainers

Fixed retainers consist of a small wire that is bonded behind the front teeth, usually on the lower teeth. Because they remain in place, they continuously help maintain alignment without requiring daily removal.

Many patients keep fixed retainers for many years to help maintain long-term stability.

How Often Should I Wear My Retainer?

Your orthodontist will provide specific instructions for wearing your retainer.

In many cases, patients wear their retainer full-time immediately after braces are removed, except when eating or brushing. After this initial phase, patients typically transition to nighttime wear.

Because teeth can shift throughout life, wearing your retainer regularly helps maintain the results of orthodontic treatment and keeps your smile looking its best.

What Happens If I Stop Wearing My Retainer?

Teeth naturally shift over time. If retainers are not worn as directed, teeth may gradually move out of alignment.

Even small changes in tooth position can affect how your teeth fit together and the appearance of your smile. Wearing your retainer regularly helps prevent this movement and protects your orthodontic results.

If your retainer no longer fits properly, contact our office. A replacement retainer may help prevent further shifting.
